Youth in Kyrgyzstan. Bridging Tradition and Modernity. (2015)
To look at the youth of a region is tantamount to looking at its future. Opportunities for personal development are of existential importance to the members of the young generation, which explains why they are highly sensitive observers of political, economic and cultural developments in their home countries. In no other age group can socio-cultural change be identified as early on and as clearly as among young people. In order to gain an insight into the youth lifeworlds in Kyrgyzstan, a project called ‘Perspektiven für die Jugend‘ (Prospects for Young People) sponsored by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH commissioned SINUS with this qualitative baseline study on the youth of Kyrgyzstan. It reveals everyday attitudes, values, role models, aspirations and expectations among young people, thus providing a basis from which the project and Kyrgyzstani youth workers can respond to real youth needs and expectations.
