Market research and potential study on combining cycling and rail travel.
Challenge
As part of a market research and potential study, the Wuppertal Institute, TH Wildau and SINUS-Institut are working with the Fahrrad und Bahnen ("Bicycle and Rail”) industry initiative to establish, for the first time, a sound basis for transport policy and transport economics decisions on the "combination of cycling and rail travel (BikeTransit)". The study focuses on cycle parking at stations, bike sharing and carrying bicycles on trains, and examines digital solutions, terms of use and distribution approaches.
The aim of the BikeTransit market research and potential study is to gain in-depth quantitative insight into the "use, needs and potential of current and prospective BikeTransit passengers". The study quantifies the contribution BikeTransit makes to shift in transport demand and climate protection, estimates its economic effects and derives the resulting needs for expansion, extension and optimisation.
Solution
Analyses of good practice examples from Germany and abroad provide the basis for benchmark recommendations on how to develop BikeTransit further in Germany, along with an initial assessment of its potential.
Several surveys are being conducted nationwide among BikeTransit users and non-users to date, in order to evaluate measures already implemented and to establish needs and willingness to use such services.
An impact and potential assessment determines the transport-related effects in terms of frequency and patterns of use, trip purposes, traffic volume and traffic performance, and modal shift. Future transport effects are estimated by scaling up BikeTransit services across Germany, and a target potential is determined. On this basis, the study derives the needs for expanding, extending and optimising BikeTransit services, estimates willingness to pay and investment requirements, quantifies economic effects and develops "recommendations for action in transport policy and transport economics".
Result
The findings are "prepared to suit the respective target groups" in order to provide actionable knowledge "for companies, associations and policymakers" in the rail and cycling sectors.
The BikeTransit project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) from resources for implementing the German National Cycling Plan (NRVP).
