The Open Music Europe (OpenMusE) project is about to be successfully concluded, marking the end of a pivotal effort to place European music ecosystems on a more competitive, fair, and sustainable footing. Funded by the European Union as a Horizon Europe project and bringing together music stakeholders and researchers from 11 EU countries and Ukraine, OpenMusE’s work was grounded in the principles of open science and open-source software development, aiming to bridge data gaps and enable data-driven actions.

The project held its Closing Event at the Linecheck Festival in Milan (November 17–22), an event renowned for shaping the future of music through dialogue, research, and shared imagination. Linecheck, themed “A Beautiful Presence,” offered an ideal environment for OpenMusE to reconnect with partners, expand conversations, and share its vision for a more transparent European music landscape. Closing OpenMusE at Linecheck underscored the vital role of meeting places where research and practice coexist, where policymakers and creators can learn from one another, and where new, transparent, equitable, and resilient models can begin to take shape.

OpenMusE developed several open-access tools and resources designed to empower music stakeholders and policymakers:

  • Open Access Music Data Dashboards: Explore interactive data dashboards and live music venue maps that reveal crucial findings on audience engagement, venue challenges, and the value of live music.Open Access Music Dataspaces: A transferable model, first deployed in Slovakia, that demonstrates how trustworthy, open music data can benefit creators, cultural institutions, and audiences.Open Music Europe Podcast: Features discussions with special guests to unpack the future of music in Europe, focusing on building a more competitive, fair, and sustainable ecosystem.Snapshots of the Local Live Music Scene: Short video interviews from Mannheim and Heidelberg, Germany, capturing the challenges and ideas of local venue owners, managers, and artists.Publications: Policy briefs, reports, and research papers addressing critical research gaps with novel data collection methods, indicators, and software solutions.

The project is funded by the European Union under grant number 101095295.
